In order to promote the further progress of the field, many universities and colleges offer courses in thermodynamics in chemistry. Many leading universities offer this course of study as a prerequisite for the doctorate degree in chemistry. It is a relatively easy course to obtain, and is often a good preparation for graduate studies in chemistry.Although the laws of the rmodynamics are still used in chemistry to describe chemical reactions, it is also used to explain why certain reactions occur when they do. A famous example of this would be the replacement of oxygen with an inert gas.Some physicists who study thermodynamics in chemistry sometimes refer to it as the Theory of Free Energy. In this regard, it is important to point out that the term 'free energy' is used in two different ways. A limited form of free energy, in which the reaction is always possible, and a form of free energy in which the reaction is impossible.To find out whether the quantity of gas at a given temperature is free energy, one needs to look at the equilibrium of the gas at that temperature. The more appropriate approach is to observe the properties of the system at different times and to predict the end result using the laws of thermodynamics. The equilibrium is usually described by an equation. The laws of thermodynamics have many applications in the natural sciences an d in the engineering sciences.
